7 signs your website is costing you customers (and what a refresh fixes)

The short answer

If your site is slow on phones, hides your phone number or booking button, looks dated, or leaves visitors guessing what to do next, it is quietly sending customers to competitors. A website refresh rebuilds the pages that matter most: mobile-first, fast, and built around one clear next step.

Most owners only look at their own website when something breaks. Your customers look at it every day, usually on a phone, usually while comparing you with two or three other options. Here is what they notice, and what the research says it costs you.

1. It's slow on a phone

About half of all web page views worldwide now come from phones.[1] Speed matters more than most owners think: in a Google-commissioned Deloitte study of 37 brands, making a mobile site just 0.1 seconds faster was associated with 8.4% more retail conversions, and lead-generation sites saw 21.6% more visitors reach the form page.[2]

2. It looks like 2016

People decide how they feel about a page's look in roughly 50 milliseconds.[3] In a Stanford study of 2,684 people judging websites, the design look was the thing mentioned most when people explained whether they trusted a site.[4] Fair or not, a dated site reads as a dated business.

Your website is the first appointment most people have with you. If it doesn't feel like the business they'd get in person, they don't book the second one.

3. Visitors can't tell what to do next

Every page should answer one question: what should I do now? Call, book, request a quote, buy. When there are six competing buttons or none at all, people leave. A refresh picks one primary action and puts it everywhere it belongs.

4. Your phone number and hours are hard to find

Local customers often want one thing: can you help me, and when? If that takes more than a thumb-scroll to find, you lose the impatient ones, and on mobile that's most of them.

5. Buttons and text are made for a desktop

Tiny tap targets, text you have to pinch to read, and menus that don't open are the most common problems we see when owners hand us a site. None of them show up on the laptop where the site was built.

6. Google doesn't understand what you do

Missing page titles, no description, no structured data, and one page trying to rank for everything make it hard for Google, and now for AI assistants like ChatGPT, to confidently recommend you. A refresh is the cheapest moment to fix the foundations.

7. You're embarrassed to send people to it

If you hesitate before sharing your link, your customers can tell. That hesitation is the clearest sign of all.

What a website refresh actually fixes

  • Your homepage and the pages customers use most, rebuilt mobile-first
  • A speed pass so pages load fast on a normal phone connection
  • One clear next step (call, book, quote or buy) on every page
  • The basics Google and AI search need: titles, descriptions and structured data
  • Launched on your existing domain, without starting over

A refresh isn't a rebrand. We keep what's working, fix what's leaking, and ship it in one to two weeks, not months.

Common questions

How is a website refresh different from a full redesign?

A refresh rebuilds the pages that drive the most business (usually the homepage and your key service or booking pages) on your existing domain, with a speed pass and a clear call to action. A full redesign starts over on the whole site, brand styling included. Most businesses get the biggest win from a refresh first.

How long does a website refresh take?

Topp Level Marketing's Website Refresh is $1,200 flat and typically takes one to two weeks, done fully remotely.

Will I lose my Google rankings if I refresh my site?

Not if it's done carefully. Keeping your URLs (or redirecting them), titles and content structure intact protects what's already ranking, and fixing speed and mobile issues usually helps.
